When winter hits Kalam Valley, the whole place turns into a snow-covered wonderland.
If you’ve only seen Kalam in summer, wait until you visit between December and February. The roads are quieter, the air is fresh, and the snowfall is magical.
Here’s everything you need to know before planning a winter trip to Kalam.
📍 How to Get There in Winter
From Islamabad:
- Drive to Mingora → Fizagat → Bahrain → Kalam
- Travel time: Around 8–10 hours (longer in snow)
- 4×4 is recommended — roads can be slippery past Bahrain
If snow is too heavy, you might need to hire a local jeep to take you up from Bahrain.
🏨 Where to Stay
Many hotels close in deep winter, but a few stay open:
- Hotel Walnut Heights (has heating)
- Gleaming Pine Kalam (modern + great views)
- Green Park Hotel (budget option)
💡 Tip: Always call and confirm if they have gas heaters or electric blankets — nights get freezing!
🌨️ What to Do in Winter
- ❄️ Snow play & photography — everything is covered in white
- ☕ Sip hot tea near the Swat River
- 🧭 Hike short local trails (with proper gear)
- 📸 Drone lovers? Bring it. Snow views from above are next level
Note: You may not be able to reach Mahodand Lake due to snow blockage. Ask locals before planning.
What to Pack
- Heavy jackets, gloves, thermal layers
- Waterproof boots (you’ll walk in snow)
- Moisturizer + lip balm
- Extra socks (wet feet = misery)
- Power bank and torch
